by Milena Sarukhanyan on July 2, 2024, 4:36 p.m.

This Independence Day, the United States will celebrate not just the birth of a nation, but the birth of new American citizens. On July 4th, approximately 11,000 immigrants will take the Oath of Allegiance in naturalization ceremonies across the country, officially becoming U.S. citizens.

Nationwide Ceremonies

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has organized more than 170 naturalization ceremonies in locations ranging from iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to local community centers. These events will not only mark the nation’s birthday but also honor the diverse backgrounds and contributions of new Americans.

Journeys of Hope and Determination

The new citizens come from over 150 countries, each with a unique journey of hope and determination. They have met the requirements for citizenship, including demonstrating proficiency in English, knowledge of U.S. history and government, and a commitment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution.

Personal Stories

Among those being naturalized is Maria Gonzalez, who emigrated from Mexico. Maria describes her journey as “a path paved with dreams and sacrifices.” Now, as she prepares to become a U.S. citizen, she is eager to “contribute to a country that has provided so many opportunities.”

A Day of Celebration

USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou highlighted the significance of these ceremonies: “This Independence Day, we celebrate not only our nation’s founding but also the newest members of our American family. Their diverse cultures, perspectives, and talents strengthen our country.”

Looking Ahead

As these 11,000 individuals pledge their allegiance to the United States, they join a rich tapestry of American society, contributing to its ongoing story of growth and renewal. This Independence Day, the nation celebrates its history and looks forward to a future enriched by the dreams and aspirations of its newest citizens.
