During the naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will inquire about your application and history. You will also undergo an English language and civics examination.

The English language test comprises three sections: reading, writing, and spoken communication. The civics test covers crucial topics related to the history and government of the United States. USCIS's official website offers immigrants resources to learn more about the test and free tools to help you prepare.

In the spoken test a USCIS officer will assess your ability to converse in English during the interview regarding Form N-400

For the reading test

You must orally read one of three sentences to demonstrate your English reading skills. The vocabulary used in the reading test will assist you in preparing for the interview segment evaluating your foreign language reading ability. The content focuses on civic and historical themes.

Regarding the written test

You must correctly write one of three sentences to demonstrate your English writing ability. The vocabulary for the written test will aid in preparing for this part of the naturalization test. The content also concentrates on civic and historical subjects.

In the civics test for naturalization, there are 100 questions. During the naturalization interview, you will be presented with up to 10 questions from this list. To pass this test, you must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly.

You have two attempts to take the English language and civics exams for each application. If you do not pass any part of the test during the initial interview, you will be retested on the specific section you failed within 60 to 90 days from the date of your first interview.
