First in the US: this state provides health insurance to illegal immigrants, causing discontent among local residents

by Milena Sarukhanyan on Feb. 22, 2024, 3:10 p.m.

For the first time in American history, one state expanded health care even to working-age illegal immigrants. The bold initiative has already sparked controversy, from excitement over equal access to healthcare for all to anger from taxpayers who bear the financial burden of providing healthcare to foreigners. You didn't believe it would happen, but it did. Medical insurance will be provided to all immigrants (including illegal immigrants of working age from 26 to 49 years). True, so far in one state.

This policy also applies to the provision of gender-affirming care to transgender and gender diverse people. This nuance corresponds to new trends in health care: comprehensive care for all people, regardless of their gender identity

This is the Medi-Cal program. for all income eligible residents regardless of immigration status. Immigration lawyers say this will even include some preventative care

The implementation of this initiative is planned for 2024. Of course, immigrants are rejoicing - they will receive quality medical services that they could not afford. And Americans argue about the responsibility of state governments in using taxpayer funds and the consequences for health care in America.

California is set to spend about $3.1 billion from its general fund to provide health insurance. Critics say it would place a heavy burden on California taxpayers, in a state where the cost of living is high.

Additionally, the policy could place additional strain on Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program. Medi-Cal already serves more than a third of California's population. If almost a million more are added, existing problems with access to health care providers and quality of care will worsen
