Blue Jackets Aim to Strengthen Late-Game Performance Against Sharks

by Lilit Jan. 6, 2026

The Columbus Blue Jackets have struggled to maintain their leads until the final period in this NHL season, with a worrying record of losing six out of 18 games when beginning the third period with an advantage—ranking second-worst in the league for this situation. As they prepare for a crucial opener of their West Coast trip against the San Jose Sharks, their focus is on reversing this trend. In their recent game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Blue Jackets initially held a notable two-goal lead going into the third period, but eventually fell to an overtime loss, highlighting a pattern the team is eager to break. Team captain Boone Jenner acknowledges the urgent need to address these shortcomings, stating, "We’ve got to close that one out. It's something we continue to work on to achieve our season goals." The team is relying on the promising talent of goaltender Jet Greaves, who has become the first-choice goalie amid struggles from veteran Elvis Merzlikins. Greaves’ consistent performance has seen a respectable goals-against average of 2.64, alongside a .910 save percentage, compared to Merzlikins' declining stats of a 4.04 GAA and .877 save percentage. Coach Dean Evason remains confident in Greaves' ability, stating, "Jet offers us stability each game, and we’re betting on him to help solidify our defense." Simultaneously, the San Jose Sharks are dealing with their own challenges, primarily involving a series of injuries that have affected their defensive lineup. Notable absences include defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and John Klingberg. Mukhamadullin's recurring upper-body injuries have troubled much of his early career, while Klingberg is expected to be out for a longer period following his recent lower-body injury. However, Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky remains hopeful about the potential return of Vincent Desharnais, who’s been practicing following an upper-body injury. This potential comeback could significantly boost the Sharks' defensive strategies. As the Blue Jackets prepare for the Sharks' challenge, both teams are striving to overcome obstacles and demonstrate resilience. Columbus aims to strengthen its endgame strategy and capitalize on Greaves’ goaltending skills. For San Jose, managing player fitness and optimizing their lineup are priorities as they seek to regain form following a recent tough loss to Tampa Bay.
