Mickey Rourke has spoken out to deny any involvement in a GoFundMe page supposedly created to prevent his eviction. In an Instagram video, Rourke, 73, expressed his frustration and confusion over the page, which has garnered over $102,000. He emphatically stated, 'I wouldn’t ask for charity; if I needed money, I wouldn’t resort to such.' Rourke, known for his roles in films like 'The Wrestler,' claimed that he had intentionally stopped paying rent due to neglected repairs by landlords and highlighted his ability to handle his affairs. The actor acknowledged past poor decisions in managing his career due to personal struggles but stressed he is not the person he used to be. Instead, he encouraged support to come from his own achievements rather than charity. Meanwhile, Rourke's manager confirmed their team started the page due to eviction threats, a gesture meant with good intent but not sanctioned by Rourke, and assured that the funds will be returned if Rourke refuses them. Despite financial constraints heightened by the COVID pandemic and a writers’ strike impacting his finances, Rourke reasserted his self-sufficiency and asked donors to seek refunds. A three-day eviction notice reported by the Los Angeles Times last month cited accrued rent costs, escalating from an initial $5,200 to $7,000, as the cause. However, Rourke maintains that infrastructural issues led him to stop paying rent. He concluded by expressing gratitude for having the essentials, emphasizing his independence and disdain for soliciting financial support through public campaigns.
