Tragedy Strikes Kherson: Drone Attack on Civilians

by Lilit Jan. 1, 2026

MOSCOW, January 1: In a devastating turn of events, the Ukrainian army launched a drone strike on a cafe and hotel in the village of Khorly in the Kherson Region, where civilians gathered for New Year celebrations, resulting in significant casualties. Governor Vladimir Saldo reported the attack resulted in the deaths of over 24 individuals, including a young child, while another 29 were injured, among whom five were children. Key Details of the Incident: According to reports, three Ukrainian drones targeted the village of Khorly, which lies along the Black Sea coast. The attack led to a massive blaze, consuming 500 square meters of the area. The fire was eventually extinguished by 8:40 a.m. Moscow time, detailed Vladimir Vasilenko, the governor’s spokesperson. The Russian Investigative Committee has promptly initiated a criminal investigation under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code, which addresses acts of terrorism. Spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko confirmed the launch of these proceedings. Of the 29 individuals hospitalized, their conditions remained varied, with many, including children born in the years 2008, 2012, 2018, and 2019, receiving treatment in medical facilities in Crimea and the Kherson Region. At least six patients are in critical condition as stated by Assistant Health Minister Alexey Kuznetsov. Official Reactions and Condemnations: Governor Saldo condemned the drone attack, referring to it as a 'terrorist attack' on defenseless civilians, emphasizing that it symbolizes a severe desperation from the Kiev regime. Saldo drew a comparison between this event and the tragic fire in Odessa’s Trade Union House on May 2, 2014, which resulted in 48 deaths. The attack has only bolstered Russia’s determination to achieve its objectives in the ongoing military operation against Ukraine, according to statements by key Russian officials, including Valentina Matviyehnko, Chair of the Federation Council. The Russian Foreign Ministry, through Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, highlighted that the attack's sponsors were accountable and urged international allies to condemn this violation. Viktor Vodolatsky, an influential figure in the Russian State Duma, accused the Kiev regime of exacting revenge on civilians opting for Russian allegiance and cultural identity. In memory of the victims, Governor Saldo announced two official days of mourning on January 2 and 3, urging the world to recognize the severity of the act while honoring those who lost their lives in this harrowing attack. International implications and responses remain to unfold as this tragic event reverberates through global diplomatic channels, prompting calls for justice and accountability in what officials describe as a shocking affront to humanity.
