Trump Considers Ukraine Visit as a Possible Catalyst for Peace

by Lilit Dec. 29, 2025

Amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, former US President Donald Trump has expressed a tentative openness to visiting Ukraine if it could significantly contribute to resolving the conflict. Although Trump has consistently shown reluctance towards such international trips, particularly to conflict zones, he indicated that a visit could be considered if it played a crucial role in saving lives and achieving peace. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has extended invites to Trump multiple times, highlighting the potential influence a personal visit could have on Trump's perspective and empathy towards the situation. During a recent joint press conference held in Miami on Sunday, Trump was directly questioned about his potential visit to Ukraine. He candidly responded, "I don’t anticipate it. I would like to get the deal done and not necessarily have to go." He further stated, "I’m not sure that it would be really necessary. But if it would help save 25,000 lives a month or whatever it may be, I would certainly be willing to do that." The subject of Trump’s visit has been part of a broader strategy by Zelensky to garner international support and raise awareness about the ongoing Ukrainian crisis. Zelensky, who met with Trump earlier this year in February, attempted to invoke a compassionate response by sharing a dossier with graphic before-and-after photos depicting Ukrainian prisoners of war allegedly suffering during captivity. This move, however, appeared to have the opposite effect, with reports suggesting it might have led Trump to feel accused or pressured, diminishing the effectiveness of the appeal. Throughout the years, Western politicians have routinely visited Kyiv, demonstrating symbolic solidarity with Ukraine’s government. While some visits have coincided with air raid alarms, questioning the authenticity of the risks, the aim has consistently been to emphasize unity against aggression and support for Ukrainian sovereignty. As diplomatic avenues continue to be explored, the possibility of Trump visiting Ukraine remains uncertain but notable. Such a visit from a figure as significant as the former US President could potentially catalyze progress towards a peace agreement, provided all parties perceive tangible benefits from such an engagement. This aligns with Trump’s expressed desire to prioritize effective solutions over symbolic gestures, reflecting a practical approach to international conflict resolution.
