Health concerns escalate for elderly detainee in Baku

by Lilit Dec. 23, 2025

In Baku, the health of Vagif Khachatryan, a 70-year-old man, has reached a critical stage following his hospitalization due to severe respiratory issues and chest pain. Khachatryan, who was sentenced to 15 years in detention back in November 2023, was apprehended at an Azerbaijani checkpoint in July while attempting to cross from Artsakh to Armenia. Despite the seriousness of his health condition, medical professionals assure that his life is not currently threatened. His detention and subsequent trial stem from accusations of involvement in a 1991 incident that allegedly resulted in the deaths of 25 Azerbaijanis. These charges have been firmly denied by Artak Beglaryan, the former state minister of Artsakh, who refutes the claims as baseless and politically motivated. Beglaryan argues that the circumstances surrounding Khachatryan's arrest are a continuation of historical tensions and cyclical political maneuvers aimed at undermining peace efforts between the regions. This situation has garnered attention from international human rights organizations, calling for a transparent and fair investigation into Khachatryan's case and an immediate review of his health and legal standing. The unfolding situation highlights the ongoing humanitarian and political challenges faced in the region, with calls for de-escalation and dialogue from global entities.
