Fort Worth Moves Forward with TEXRail Medical District Extension

by Lilit Dec. 22, 2025

The ambitious plans to expand Fort Worth's TEXRail line are advancing as Trinity Metro successfully revises a key construction contract, setting the groundwork for a 2.1-mile extension to the city’s bustling Medical District. Trinity Metro's board of directors recently approved changes to the existing contract with Fort Worth Transit Partners, first established in mid-2023. These amendments outline an increased budget nearing $33.1 million, factoring in potential cost fluctuations. Chief Engineer Richey Thompson highlighted the significance of this update, which marks the effective commencement of the construction phase. 'Today represents a foundational step for Trinity Metro to move forward with the TEXRail extension project,' Thompson explained. Spanning two distinct phases, the contract allocates a Guaranteed Maximum Price for initial procurement of critical materials, like steel and specialized track systems, before tackling comprehensive construction tasks. The envisioned stretch will commence from the downtown T&P Station, reaching the heart of the Medical District near Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center. Earlier this year, a significant boost came from a $25 million RAISE grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Though the project’s total price tag exceeds $167 million, Trinity Metro still seeks an additional $20 million to break ground, with construction timelines pending exact confirmation. This expansion initiative aligns with the rising TEXRail patronage, which saw over 877,000 rider trips in the recent year—a notable 12% growth spurred by connections to neighboring transit services like Dallas Area Rapid Transit's Silver Line. CEO Rich Andreski stated, 'Our mission extends beyond transportation, serving as a critical engine for economic growth and accessibility in Fort Worth and across Tarrant County.' While the precise project timeline remains uncertain, Trinity Metro remains committed to its completion, optimistic about securing the required remaining funding.
