A man is celebrating a windfall after forgetting to cancel his monthly lottery subscription. James Adams of Kingswood, England, was told by his fiancée, Rohanna Coulthard, to stop direct debit payments to the People’s Postcode Lottery three months before the October draw, according to a press release from the People’s Postcode Lottery (PPL). Coulthard made the request hoping to save money for their wedding in June next year. However, the 31-year-old graphic designer forgot about it and ended up winning more than $166,000. Adams later told PPL that he had planned to cancel the payments three months earlier but forgot, and he jokingly described the mix-up as luck. Coulthard recalled that her initial reaction to the win was a scream and laughter. She added that James had not told her he had signed up, and she had asked him to cancel the direct debit when she saw it come through because they are saving for the wedding. She said she was glad he hadn’t canceled, or she wouldn’t be doing as well. Celebrating the win on BBC Radio Bristol, Adams said he was over the moon and in shock, and that they still did not believe it. He said he had intended to cancel the Postcode Lottery a couple of months earlier to save for a few things. He joked that he might use the win to tease his fiancée and that it was lucky he forgot to cancel. Meanwhile, seven other neighbors in Kingswood, near Bristol (BS15 8AJ), won an equal sum as part of the lottery’s weekly Millionaire Street Prize. Several local charities are set to receive payouts as well. Gemma Marson-May, a neighbor who joined the lottery in August, said she had a strong feeling she would win in the coming months. She now plans to use her winnings to go on a holiday with her fiancé and to buy a house. She noted that although the idea sounded like nonsense, she felt compelled to join and would have regretted it if she hadn’t.
