Lee Greenwood Responds to Super Bowl Halftime Show Proposal

by Lilit Oct. 9, 2025

Country music singer Lee Greenwood has responded to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson’s call for him to replace Bad Bunny as the headliner for the NFL’s Super Bowl halftime show in February. Greenwood, 82, said that he would perform strongly at the Super Bowl after years of singing for NFL teams, in particular at their Salute to Service games, according to TMZ. He also wrote on X on Thursday: “Nothing compares to hearing God Bless the USA echo through a football stadium — thousands of proud Americans standing shoulder to shoulder, singing every word.” Nothing compares to hearing God Bless the USA echo through a football stadium — thousands of proud Americans standing shoulder to shoulder, singing every word. pic.twitter.com/ci3BmY5wHE— Lee Greenwood (@TheLeeGreenwood) October 9, 2025. It comes after the NFL announced in September that Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, would headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. When asked about the choice on Tuesday, Johnson said: “I didn’t even know who Bad Bunny was, but it sounds like a terrible decision in my view. Well, it sounds like he’s not someone who appeals to a broader audience. And I think, you know, there’s so many eyes on the Super Bowl. A lot of young, impressionable children.” He added: “And I think, in my view, you would have Lee Greenwood or role models doing that. Not somebody like this.” Lee Greenwood performing at President Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington D.C. in January. (Alex Brandon/AP) This is a developing story. More to follow.
