Hours after presenting the lineup of the French government, the French prime minister resigned. Sébastien Lecornu, the former French defense minister, had been leading the government since September 9, 2025. He remained in office for 27 days, shorter than any other prime minister in France's recent history. On October 5, he unveiled part of the new cabinet of ministers. Opposition parties criticized that cabinet, saying they would table a motion of no confidence in Lecornu's ministerial cabinet. In the last two years, Sébastien Lecornu became France's fifth prime minister. In that position he succeeded François Bayrou, who had led the government nine months earlier. On September 8, 2025, Parliament expressed no confidence in Bayrou's government due to budget reforms. Since September 2024, France has been in a political crisis. It began after snap parliamentary elections, after which Parliament was divided among three political forces, none of which held a majority. Photo by AFP.
