Armenia parliament speaker not ruling out Azerbaijan finding new reason not to sign peace treaty

by Lilit Oct. 1, 2024

When we discuss some document or loudly express an opinion, we first look to see if it causes a problem with our constitution or not, Armenian National Assembly (NA) speaker Alen Simonyan said while speaking with reporters at the NA Tuesday. "It is not appropriate to question the impartiality of the Constitutional Court [of Armenia] in any way because I can give many cases and examples that the opinion of the [Armenian] authorities and the political climate had the opposite picture with the Constitutional Court's decision. When we discuss with the people who are engaged in the discussions, we check in advance that there is nothing that would contradict the constitution [of Armenia]," Simonyan said. According to him, the regulation on the joint activity of the commissions on delimitation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be above because the Constitutional Court of Armenia will give a conclusion as to whether or not this regulation contradicts the constitution of Armenia. "The draft of the peace treaty [between Armenia and Azerbaijan] states that it will be above all other legal documents," said the NA speaker. Commenting on Azerbaijan's demand to change Armenia's constitution, Alen Simonyan said: "It is unfounded. I don't rule out that after a few days, when that conversation will dissipate, which I think people in the international organizations have already understood and Azerbaijan must have already received those messages that their claim about the constitution [of Armenia] is very unfounded, I don't rule out that tomorrow, the other every day they [i.e. the Azerbaijanis] will find a new reason, they will find a new thing [not to sign the peace treaty]. But we [i.e. Armenia] will continue our work to make the peace treaty a reality." The Armenian parliament speaker reiterated that in the case of political will, there is no problem to sign the peace agreement today—and based on the points already agreed upon.
