Pashinyan: Armenia has proposed to sign already agreed articles of peace treaty with Azerbaijan before COP29

by Lilit Sept. 26, 2024

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan took part in a discussion entitled "Leadership for peace: united in respect of the UN Charter, in search of a secure future," organized by the UN Security Council. Welcoming the attendees, the PM said that the global security crisis has undermined the multilateral system, and we continue to witness an increasing number of conflicts and crises that have a heavy impact on civilians, including the most vulnerable. Pashinyan said that the United Nations must resist attempts to create situations where the use of force, acts of aggression, and gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in interstate relations are considered normal. The Armenian premier shared his belief that peace requires leadership and genuine political courage. Pashinyan said that he and the Armenian government led by him are committed to ending the conflict in its region and transforming the current dynamics into cooperation for prosperity, stability, and peace. Pashinyan said Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, and the Armenian side has proposed to sign the already agreed articles of this peace treaty before the COP29 UN Climate Change Conference to be held in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku in November, thus creating a stimulating environment to advance the peace process. The premier said that the Crossroads of Peace initiative of the Armenian government aims to unlock the economic potential of the region and strengthen economic and cultural ties, thereby promoting political dialogue and the achievement of comprehensive peace for the benefit of all peoples. Pashinyan said that Armenia is ready to use the positive momentum and continue the border delimitation process with Azerbaijan based on the regulation between the two countries’ delimitation commissions—and based on the 1991 Almaty Declaration. Strong and unequivocal support from the United Nations to Armenia's efforts for a just and lasting peace in the region is extremely important, Nikol Pashinyan concluded.
