Pittsburgh, USA proclaims September 21 as Armenia National Day

by Lilit Sept. 23, 2024

Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Ed Gainey has proclaimed September 21, 2024 as Armenia National Day on the occasion of the Armenian Independence Day anniversary. The proclamation recalls that on December 21, 1991, Armenia announced its independence from the Soviet Union, declaring the historic moment of its re-independence as a sovereign nation after centuries of foreign rule. Armenia is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with a rich cultural heritage and history dating back to ancient times, including the formation of the first Christian state in 301, the proclamation said. The proclamation says that the Republic of Armenia has demonstrated a commitment to democratic values, human rights and the rule of law, and has been recognized by other democratic nations, including the United States. Over the past 32 years, Armenia has consolidated its sovereignty and independence, fostering ties with the United States and other nations, and becoming a vital player in regional and international relations, the proclamation stresses. “Armenians in Pittsburgh and around the world have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic and social fabric of their communities while preserving their unique heritage traditions and the Armenian people have shown resilience and strength in the face of adversity, including the Armenian Genocide of 1915, and have continued to thrive and contribute to the global community,” also reads an excerpt from the proclamation. Mayor Ed Gainey, proclaiming Armenia National Day, encouraged citizens to recognize the rich history, cultural heritage, and contributions of the Armenian community.
