Summer 2024 was Earth’s warmest on record

by Lilit Sept. 9, 2024

This summer was the Earth's warmest on record, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, Bloomberg reports. Between June and August, surface air temperatures were 0.69 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average, surpassing the previous peak set for 2023, the Copernicus report said. In Europe, the temperature from June to August was 1.54 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average. The most extreme conditions were recorded in the Mediterranean region and Eastern Europe. Across Europe, temperature records have been broken over the summer, BBC reports. Austria had their warmest on record. Spain had its warmest August on record, Finland its joint warmest and Switzerland second warmest. “Temperature-related extreme events witnessed this summer will only become more intense,” said Copernicus deputy director Samantha Burgess.
