News - Human rights in Armenia are no longer considered something imported, Freedom House official says

There is no comprehensive understanding of “human rights,” and it is talked about in pieces. Marc Behrendt, Director for Europe and Eurasia programs at Freedom House international human rights organization, stated this at the Armenian Forum for Democracy on Monday. There have been many developments and progress in Armenia over the course of 25 years, Behrendt  said. If democracy and human rights were at a more declarative level before, he does not believe that there was a demand for them among the Armenian public. Maybe people equated it with justice or external values. But now, Behrendt finds that there is more demand and understanding of human rights in Armenia, and this is not seen as something imported from outside. The Armenian public has a demand for human rights. But during crises and wars, situations become complicated, these gaps become more visible, and this is an important consideration that should be taken into account, added the Freedom House official.
