Iran ambassador to Armenia: We are against any change of internationally recognized borders

by Lilit June 28, 2024

Today is a crucial day for Iran and the people of Iran; this is the 14th presidential election in the country. Iran's ambassador to Armenia, Mehdi Sobhani, told this to reporters at the Iranian embassy in Armenia Friday. "This shows that the Iranian government is based on the vote of the Iranian people. Today we are voting for a powerful Iran, for a progressive, happy, and developed Iran. Today, the elections started at 8 o'clock in the morning, the Iranians in Armenia have already come and voted, which means that the future of Iran is important for them. Two polling stations and one mobile ballot box will be opened in Armenia. One of the [polling] stations will be at the embassy, the other—at the Blue Mosque [in downtown Yerevan]. I am convinced that in Armenia they are following the Iranian elections very seriously, and I fully hope that we will have such a result that will benefit both the people of Iran and Iran-Armenia relations," said the Iranian ambassador. And to the question whether Iran’s relations with Armenia will undergo any changes as a result of these elections, he responded: "Our [i.e. Iran’s] policy towards Armenia is very principled. The governments that come to power act within the framework of that policy. Iran's principled policy towards Armenia was voiced by the leader of the Iranian revolution, it was also emphasized during the meeting with the [Armenian] prime minister in Iran. We respect the territorial integrity of Armenia and support it. We are against any change of internationally recognized borders, as well as any geopolitical change. That principled policy will never change, regardless of whether the governments in Iran and Armenia may change. Armenia is an important country for us, it is our good and honest neighbor. The security and interests of the two countries are intertwined. This principled policy cannot be changed by a change of governments."
