by Lilit June 28, 2024

At least seven people were killed and five others injured when a passenger train collided with a bus near the town of Nove Zamky in southern Slovakia, local emergency services said. "I fear that the death toll from this accident may rise," rescue service spokeswoman Petra Klimesova told AFP. The accident happened at around 5pm Thursday. International express EuroCity 279 was traveling from Prague to Budapest. There were nine people in the aforesaid bus, including the driver. The bus was torn into two parts, one part was thrown back, and the other part was dragged by the train for several dozens of meters, Mynovezamky writes. As a result of the accident, the locomotive of the train caught fire, and the driver was injured. According to various sources, there were 100 to 200 people in the train. None of them sustained serious injuries. Five ambulances and three rescue helicopters arrived at the scene. The collision took place at a railway crossing guarded by barriers and light signals. Allegedly, they were damaged after the storm the other day and had to be repaired the same day, reports Noviny. Slovak railways representatives have not commented on these reports.
