News - Azerbaijan legislature petitions to president for snap parliamentary election

The Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (parliament) has appealed to President Ilham Aliyev on the holding of a snap parliamentary election in the country, Trend reports A total of 105 MPs voted in favor of accepting this petition, only one voted against it. The leadership of the ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party on Thursday convened a meeting, as a result of which it was decided to petition to the president with a request to dissolve the current Azerbaijani parliament. According to Tahir Budagov, Chairman of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party board, this is dictated by the fact that in November of this year, when the regular elections of parliament shall take place according to the plan, the 29th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and several other major international events will be held in Azerbaijan. "We believe that taking into account these factors, it is important to ensure the full work of the parliament in that period," Budagov added. According to the constitution of Azerbaijan, the right to dissolve the parliament and call for parliamentary elections belongs to the president. The parliament of Azerbaijan has 125 MPs, who are elected for a period of five years. The parliament of the current convocation was formed by the results of the snap elections of February 9, 2020.
