Yerevan’s Marshal Baghramyan Avenue blocked by opposition movement for 3rd day already

by Lilit June 12, 2024

It is already the third day that supporters of the opposition Tavush for the Homeland movement, led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, have spent the night on Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, which runs along the main entrance of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia. The avenue is still closed off by this opposition movement, and there are many tents there. Also for three days, the police have formed a human chain and closed of the entrances to Derenik Demirchyan Street—which runs along the side entrance of the NA building—both from Marshal Baghramyan Avenue and Proshyan Street—which runs along the entrance to the PM’s residence. The situation on Marshal Baghramyan Avenue is calm at the moment. Early Wednesday morning, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan livestreamed, presented the situation at Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, and announced that he is waiting for everyone there at 3pm. The protests and civil disobedience actions by the opposition Tavush for the Homeland movement, led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, had started in Armenia after it became known on April 19 that Armenia and Azerbaijan had agreed to start border delimitation at Tavush Province of Armenia. After holding subsequent demonstrations in Kirants village of Tavush Province for days, Archbishop Galstanyan had announced that he was going to march to Yerevan to demand the resignation of PM Nikol Pashinyan. Arriving in the Armenian capital on May 9, Galstanyan held a large rally demanding Pashinyan's resignation. And during the rally on May 26, the transitional government was announced, whose PM candidate is Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan.
