Construction Quality: How to Accept Work and Check Levels & Geometry

High construction quality is not only about materials—it is also about correct geometry, levels, and documented acceptance. Whether you are renovating an apartment or managing a contractor through a business directory, a clear inspection routine helps you avoid expensive rework. Start with preparation: request drawings, scope of work, and a schedule of hidden works (waterproofing, wiring, screed, insulation). Bring basic tools: a laser level (or long spirit level), tape measure, square, plumb line, and a 2 m straightedge. Take photos during every stage. Check geometry first. Measure diagonals of rooms: equal diagonals usually indicate correct angles. Use a square to spot 90° corners, especially near doorways and tiled areas. For walls, place a straightedge and measure gaps—large waves will later ruin cabinetry and tile alignment. Verify verticality with a plumb line/laser: out-of-plumb walls cause visible seams, crooked doors, and uneven skirting. Check levels next. For floors, scan the surface with a laser and record height differences across the room; pay attention to transitions between rooms and the future finish thickness. For ceilings, verify that perimeter lines are consistent and that lighting points match the plan. Inspect finishes: tile spacing and lippage, paint uniformity under side light, clean silicone lines, tight junctions, and smooth corners. Finally, create a punch list (snag list) with locations, photos, deadlines, and acceptance criteria. Sign acceptance only after corrections and keep all receipts, warranties, and hidden-works certificates.
